Dreamhost may not have the quickest turn around time on their customer service, but they do try and make existing customers happy by continually offering random account upgrades.
Here's the latest:
"Hey Just-Became-Happier DreamHost Customers!
In honor of our 8th birthday, as of right now, all our shared hosting
plans have been upgraded to include unlimited fully-hosted domains and
sub-domains, forever!
You don't have to do anything, we've retro-actively applied this to all
current customer plans."
Awesome, the only lacking part of my plan was I could only host 15 domains, solved. Thank You Dreamhost!
Also fingered out how to add an affiliate link to the Dreamhost link, so Disclaimer or whatever, any
Dreamhost link from now on will have an affiliate link embedded.
So I've seen Ruby on Rails mentioned in various locations, maybe I'll experiment with it some now that it's virtually free to do so:
Free Ruby Hosting. Just a few bucks to buy a domain and I'm on my way.
Easier than php?
My server for a few sites was down almost the entire day yesterday, and still most of the day today the sites are excruciatingly slow loading.
The reason: "Serious electricity problems in the Los Angeles area took our entire network off-line for a few hours. Service is currently being restored.
Power to our data center has now been restored and our network is back up. Our servers and equipment are being powered on gradually to avoid potentially damaging power spikes. Barring any complications, your websites and email will be fully operational again very soon."
I think I'll read a book this evening.
Ftp clients aren't that sexy, however I've recently switched to
FileZilla and love it.
No bugs, long connections times (I thought this was a fault of my host?), and I believe it's made by the Firefox folks.
I moved from LeechFTP which I'd grown used to the annoying disconnects, hangs on uploads, crashes, etc. A welcome change.
Maybe I'll try the diy hosting next go around?
VHCS - " VHCS is a Professional Control Panel Software for shared, reseller, virtual and dedicated server management.
VHCS was designed for professional Hosting Service Providers and IT-Professionals."
This is an ugly thing to see on every page of your site, a screenshot from the homepage of AutomateExcel.com:
I sent support an email, let's see how the new host is going to hold up.
UPDATE 1: Now the entire site is down :-)
UPDATE 2: Dreamhost Customer Support is lousy. 14 hours after my initial support ticket, I haven't recieved a response from them, and my site is still down! Here's a screengrab of my help tickets:
A tip Dreamhost, add the ability to update a ticket. Notice there are 2 tickets out. This is becuase I couldn't add a comment to the original ticket to notify you the site was down also.
Note: My opinion is relative to my experience. I was previously hosting with
lunarpages. I sent them around 10 support tickets in the year I hosted there and no ticket went longer than 60 minutes without a response. If you're used to waiting days, I guess dreamhosting may be an improvement for you. Definitely downhill for me so far, in the customer service department anyways.
Final UPDATE: The site came back up yesterday, after being down for around 36 hours, I was away so I didn't note it here.
To sum it up... the site was down for almost 20 hours before I recieved a response from customer service, in which they claimed it was my fault. I responded to the email saying "no it's not" and never heard back. Magically it worked again after another 16 hours or so.
The Dreamhost package has everything I want, however their customer service response time is miserable. I've still got 60 days on my money back gaurantee, I'm gonna hang out for a bit longer and see if things get better.
